We are very happy to announce that 18-year old girl, Leah Wray has signed for our Grimsby Town Women’s team. Leah has been playing her football to date at Cleethorpes Town, and she is described as an exciting young prospect.
Speaking about Town’s latest addition to his side, manager Dale Houlston said: “In Leah we have a very promising young player that the coaching team felt was in need of the right platform and environment in which to develop, and I feel that is exactly what we can provide her with at our football club.
“She has done very nicely in pre-season training and I am really looking forward to seeing her grow and develop as a player. We said from the start last season that our women’s football project wants to give talented young local girls the opportunity to join Grimsby Town Football Club and pull on a Town shirt, and we stand by that as a policy. Last season we brought in a number of young players from the area and they thrived on the opportunity, and we will continue to look to support local girls that demonstrate the true potential to be a Town player.
“Leah has played in a number of positions, and she is another left-footer, which brings us up to four players that are naturally left-footed. That gives the team a lot of balance doesn’t it”.
Speaking about joining the Mariners, Leah said: “It feels amazing to have to opportunity be playing for Grimsby Town. I have always followed Grimsby since I was young as it is the closest professional team to where I live and it feels great to be part of the club. The women’s team did great in their first season not losing a game. Hopefully, this season will be just as good but the challenges will be tougher in the next league up.
“I am mostly looking forward to playing with a new group of girls, and also learning a new way of playing football. I have always played for Cleethorpes, and I know it is going to be a learning curve for me which is exciting. The girls here have a good backing behind them from both the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to getting to know people”.
“Pre-season has been really tough so far, and very different because we have been doing a lot of fitness work which is something I’m not used to, but the benefit from it will be good. It has also been good to get to know the girls as well, as there are a lot of new face and some familiar faces in the group. Overall pre-season has been good and I’m excited about the new season ahead”.
Stay tuned for more incomings soon . . .
