Women’s Team Report | Grimsby Town 3-1 Anstey Nomads

The Mariners welcomed relegation rivals Anstey Nomads to Wintringham in their return to league action following a semi final win last week against local rivals Cleethorpes Town.

Sunday saw a meeting between two sides that met in the league just two weeks prior with the visitors coming out on top winning 3-2.

Town made a fast start to proceedings leading after just two minutes. Beth Wharton the scorer latching onto a Danielle Brighton pass before firing beyond the keeper to put the hosts ahead.

The Mariners continued to assert their early dominance with Eden Pedersen, Wharton and Ellie Wilson all testing the goalkeeper with efforts. Soon Brighton added the second, in the 22nd minute the captain finished off a well-worked move which bean with Kershaw and ended with Brighton beating the keeper to the ball and finding the bottom left corner with her strike.

Grimsby continued to create chances to extend their lead but failed to add to the tally and were pegged back with less than 15 minutes to go before the break. Chloe Grey in the Town goal had largely been a spectator in the first half was beaten by a speculative effort by Price who took aim from 35 yards out and looped a shot over Grey to half the advantage.

Anstey went close to finding a equaliser on the stroke of halftime as a short corner routine was intercepted and cleared forward finding Price in a almost carbon copy position from where she had scored from but this time Grey was able to backtrack and make a incredible save to keep the Mariners ahead.

Town went into the break ahead, the interval brought about two changes as Pariss Welsh and Harriet Dalton were replaced by Abbie Emslie and Jade Appels.

The second half largely followed the same pattern as the first with the hosts dominating proceedings and creating chances without managing to extend their lead, Anstey continued to soak up the pressure and looked to release Price on the counter who was a persistent threat.

Brighton and Pedersen saw efforts go wide of the mark as Lily Jacklin was denied by some impressive last-ditch defending by the Anstey backline as the game headed towards the final 2o minutes.

The result was put to bed with less than 15 minutes to play, Brighton netted her second of the afternoon volleying home from 15 yards out after a Pedersen delivery wasn’t cleared by Anstey the midfielder picked out the top corner to seal all three points for the Mariners.
