Our women’s team secured the league title with a 1-0 win yesterday afternoon against St Joseph’s Rockaware of Worksop after a late Alisha DeJonge header sealed the three points.
Going into the match, Hayley Cox’s team needed just two points from the final three games of the campaign and, going into the last ten minutes of the match, it looked like they wouldn’t be able to get the job done over the weekend.
While Town were dominant, no chances were converted into goals until the dying moments of the match.
It was perhaps fitting that it was one of the Mariners’ top performing players throughout the season who clinched promotion and, in the 87th minute, it was midfielder DeJonge who soared to head home a cross into the St Joseph’s box.
The goal sparked celebrations for the whole team and then, when the final whistle sounded, those celebrations continued for the team who have dominated the East Midlands Womens Regional Football League Division One North this season.
Speaking after the match, Manager Cox said: “It was an absolutely fantastic game for the girls. They thoroughly deserved that win but I didn’t think the goal was going to come!
“We had so much possession, so many shots on goal and then Alisha steps up with three minutes to go and a bullet of a header. The girls deserve it all. From start to finish, the season that they have had and the run they have been on, every single member of the squad has been fantastic. The management team couldn’t be prouder!”
Goalscorer DeJonge said: “It’s great. All of the girls worked really hard and we want to all thank the management team. We were so close to getting the goal and it’s shocking, really, that it was just one goal that did it but that’s all we needed.
“Everyone is so happy and we can’t wait for the next step!”
To celebrate the women’s success this season, their final home match of the league season on Sunday 23rd April against St Joseph’s Rockaware of Worksop will be played at Blundell Park with a 2pm kick-off. Ticketing information for the fixture will be announced in due course.
Everyone at the Mariners would like to congrulate Hayley and her team on their promotion!
