Wright Pens New Deal

Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce that midfielder, Max Wright has signed a new two-year-deal with the club until the summer of 2020.

The club triggered a year extension to his contract at the end of the season however, manager Michael Jolley has put trust in the youngster and offered him a new deal. The 20-year-old penned a new deal back in August 2017 and immediately joined Scarborough Athletic on loan.

Michael Jolley has been speaking to gtfc.co.uk regarding the news that Max has put pen to paper on his new deal. “Max is fully deserving of his new contract and we are pleased to be able to offer him it”, said Jolley. “He has earned the contract with his energetic and hard working performances whilst training with the first team and also on loan at Scarborough last season”.

During his loan spell, Max went on to make a number of eye-catching performances, scoring 15 goals, making over 15 assists and picked up 8 home man-of-the-match awards on their way to promotion. Max was also part of the squad that fell at the final hurdle in the North Riding Senior Cup, losing 1-0 at the Riverside stadium to Middlesbrough under-23’s. Regularly watched by the management team throughout the season, Max’s performances have convinced manager, Michael Jolley to secure his services for the future.

Speaking exclusively to gtfc.co.uk this afternoon, Wright discussed his loan spell at the Seadog’s last season. “It was a great experience”, said Wright. “There are lots of ex-pro’s, big and physical players which helped me learn a lot about my game and I definitely feel that I have improved and I can feel the benefits of it. Hopefully the experiences that I gained at Scarborough, I can bring with me and put them out there on the pitch at Blundell Park.”

The manager is now looking forward to welcoming Wright back for pre-season ahead of the 18/19 season. “Max has the opportunity to make an impact on the first team squad when we return for pre season”, said Jolley. “As a local lad, we hope that he can break through in the same way that Harry Clifton has this season”.

“Like every young player, there is a great deal of hard work ahead of him, but I am sure Max will apply himself diligently to his development to give himself the best chance of being successful. He will certainly get every support from the club to keep improving and moving forward as a player. Well done Max!”

Max signed his first professional contract with the club when The Mariners returned to the Football League in 2016, after progressing through the Academy system that he has been part of since the age of 9 and told us that he is over the moon to continue at his hometown club. “I’ve been at the club for years and years so I am really happy to sign for another two years here, hopefully I can kick on but as a Grimsby lad, this means a lot and is all i’ve ever wanted!”
