Our under 17s and under 19s teams competed against Stoke City in the Peter Handyside Trophy at Cheapside this afternoon.
The trophy was set up by both clubs last summer to honour Handyside who passed away in February last year, a defender who represented both sides during his playing career.
The cultured defender made over 200 appearances for the Mariners and was notably part of the sides that won promotion to the First Division and lifted the Auto Windscreens Shield at Wembley.
His move to Stoke followed where he featured 88 times and also skippered the Potters to promotion.
This afternoon’s occasion saw Town’s under 19s emerge victorious after goals from Carlo Midwinter and Ted Sharp were both cancelled out in normal time, before u16s goalkeeper Reece Hall was the penalty hero in the shootout, saving all three of Stoke’s spot-kicks.
Grimsby’s u17s were also crowned winners at Cheapside, after a brace from Fortune Jack, a goal from Kristian Catchpole and an own goal meant the other game ended 4-2 to the Mariners.
Members of Handyside’s family and former teammates, Tony Gallimore and and Stuart Burns, were in attendance and handed out the trophies to the winning teams and the players of the matches.
It was a fitting tribute to a player loved by both clubs.
