Youth Team Progress In FA Youth Cup

Grimsby Town hosted FC Halifax Town on Tuesday night at Blundell Park in one of the FA Youth Cup Qualifying Round.

A delayed kick-off and heavy rain didn’t put Town off though as they got off to a great start when Harvey Tomlinson’s free-kick found the back of the next smashing off the underside of the bar, very similar to that of Alex Hunt vs Barnet for the first team!

Town did stride forward looking for their second, Hodgson linked up well with Milner only to see the linesman’s flag raised with what would have been a fine goal.

The midfield battle was scrappy, but Town continued to create chances, the opposition keeper showing safe hands from Branwell’s close-range header.

Tomlinson doubled Towns advantage thought when Markham slid the ball through and the keeper misjudged the pace of it to see Tomlinson round the keeper and roll it into an empty net to make it two.

Town could have added a third when Essel broke free only to see his effort well saved by the Shaymens stopper.

The second half Town had much more controlled possession and created multiple chances.

Town did add a third when Milner raced clear and hit a great left-footed shot off the post and into the back of the net.

Town continued to add pressure but Halifax seemed determined to not concede again, Tomlinson, Milner, Thorpe and Essel all going close without adding another.

A comfortable 3-0 win for the Mariners which sees them progress to the next round.

Next up for Town is league action on Saturday away versus Lincoln City.
