YOUTH TEAM REPORT | BLACKPOOL 1-1 GRIMSBY TOWN

The points were shared at Bamber Bridge as our Young Mariners travelled to face Blackpool in the League on Saturday.

Elliot Smith’s 70th minute equaliser cancelled out The Seasiders’ opener earlier in the second-half in a second consecutive League stalemate.

Neil Woods made four changes to his side that emerged winners away at Mansfield in the opening game of their FA Youth Cup journey last Friday.

Hayden Rogers took his place between the sticks, with Charlie Carrick, Carlo Midwinter and Tom Rennardson earning starting positions replacing Alfie Foy, Charlie Hatton and Elliot Smith, with the last two taking their place on the bench.

Town had positive spells in the first-half, with Jack Collins going close on several occasions as the Mariners looked to take the advantage away from home.

The hosts took control of the game and had plenty of possession, but didn’t create any chances that were troubling for Rogers in the Town net and the game was goalless at the break.

Town grew into the game early in the second period and gained more territory, but it was the hosts that opened the scoring when a long ball in behind saw their forward race clear and finish from close-range.

Going a goal down allowed the Mariners to kick into gear and create plenty of chances to search for the equaliser, with Collins going close again and Rennardson getting in on the action.

It was substitute Smith who found the equaliser on the 70 minute mark and from then on it was all one-way traffic, with Neil Woods’ side looking the most likely to grab the winner.

Town thought the three points were theirs when Grayson Giles’ strike was superbly tipped onto the post to deny the team in black and white a late hurrah, but the team in black and white left Blackpool with only a point.

The Young Mariners are next in action on Friday when they welcome Salford City to Blundell Park in the second round of the FA Youth Cup.

Tickets are available to purchase by clicking here or by visiting the Blundell Park Ticket Office between 10am-4pm during the week.
