The Mariners Youth Team topped their group in the Youth Alliance Cup as they overcame an unbeaten Harrogate Town 2-1 away from home.
The result in the competition added to their victories over Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers, meaning the Mariners currently remain unbeaten in the competition.
Town started on the front foot and had a golden opportunity early in the game. Henry Brown’s interception and piercing pass to Grayson Giles looked to be the perfect chance to give the Mariners the advantage, but the forward’s strike glided frustratingly the wrong side of the post.
It was Harrogate who took the lead against the run of play. Town couldn’t clear a ball that came into the box and the Sulphurites smashed home from close range.
Giles then had an effort cleared off the line, but not long after, was rewarded for his constant efforts up front with an equaliser. An excellent run saw the striker bring the ball inside the box and calmly slot home to level the score.
Town took the lead in the second-half when Smith’s perfectly-timed cross was met by Giles who made no mistake as he slotted home for his brace and the Mariner’s second of the game.
Neil Woods’ side was put under plenty of pressure as the clock wound down to full-time, but defended their box excellently and deservedly took the three points back to Grimsby and put them top group G.
Town have one final group stage game remaining in December as they host Hartlepool. A positive result for Town in this fixture would see them progress further in the competition.
The Mariners are next in action on Saturday as they travel to face Stockport in the League.
