Youth Team Report | Young Mariners extend unbeaten streak

Grimsby earned another three points following a 4-0 win over Salford City in the Youth Alliance Cup group stage on Friday afternoon at Bradley FDC.

Town made a good start to the game creating a host of chances, their early pressure ultimately told in the 18th minute when Cameron Gardner emphatically smashed home a Foy through ball to set the young mariners on their way.

It wouldn’t be long before the hosts doubled their advantage, after a well constructed move Charlie Clements headed home making the score 2-0.

Grimsby were showing no signs of let up as they chased a third but couldn’t make a number of chances count as Salford survived further onslaught for the remainder of the first half as Town went into the break two to the good.

The hosts came out in the second half in similar fashion looking to extend the lead, Henry Brown produced a brilliant piece of solo skill beating three Salford players before coolly clotting beyond the keeper from inside the box.

Like the first half Town created a number of opportunities that went begging before the deserved fourth and final goal of the afternoon was scored by Grayson Giles who converted from close range, pouncing after the visiting keeper parried the initial strike on target.

The hosts saw out the 4-0 win setting up for an intriguing meeting with Wrexham in December as the group continues to take shape. The young mariners now have a trip to South Shields on Wednesday night in the 2nd round of the FA Youth Cup.
