Youth Team Report | Young Mariners handed defeat

Our young Mariners suffered defeat at the hands of Wrexham at Cheapside on Saturday.

Neil Woods made five changes to the side that bowed out of the Youth Alliance Cup last time out.

Charlie Carrick, Mamadu Jalloh, Charlie Hatton, Harvey Cribb and Charlie Clements made the starting eleven ahead of Alfie Foy, Finley Axcell, Harry Shipstone, Jack Collins and Elliot Smith.

Town dominated the opening exchanges of the tie with possession and a flurry of set pieces gave them chances to take an early lead, but nothing came of the early pressure put on the visitors.

Wrexham took the lead on the 15-minute mark when an initial effort was cleared off the line, but the rebound followed to give the Red Dragons the lead.

The advantaged was doubled with half-an-hour on the clock from inside the area and Neil Woods’ side were two goals down at the break.

The second-half continued on in much the same vein, with the visitors adding a further two goals to their tally.

Town grabbed a consolation goal and the goal of the afternoon, when Foy’s fantastic diagonal ball found substitute Smith, who’s shot from the edge of the box curled into the bottom corner.

Next up for Town is the visit of table-toppers Bolton at Cheapside on Saturday in a 12pm kick-off.

Town: Rogers, Carrick, Jalloh (Collins, 65’), Hatton (Foy, 70’), Onoh, Graham, Rennardson (Shipstone, 60’), Cribb, Midwinter (Smith, 65’), Clements, Brown
