Youth Team Report | Young Mariners through to Quarter-Finals of Youth Alliance Cup

A 4-1 win at home to Wrexham in the final group match secured the young Mariners advancement into the Quarter-Finals of the Youth Alliance Cup.

The meeting with Wrexham was Neil Woods side’s first outing since their FA Youth Cup triumph against Nottingham Forest, the young Mariners showed no signs of a lack of sharpness as they made a fast and impressive start to the game.

Withing the opening five minutes Cameron Gardner put Town ahead, the forward cut inside from the right and confidently fired home with his left foot.

Gardner doubled his and Grimsby’s advantage shortly after dispatching a free kick from 20-yards out, the power of the strike too much for the visiting keeper.

Wrexham did however halve the lead not long after falling two behind. A finish from inside the box beat Seb Auton.

The hosts quickly restored their two goal advantage, Fortune Onoh the scorer curling an effort into the top corner from outside the box.

Grimsby added their fourth before the break putting together the best move of the game opening up the visitors. Axcell fed Henry Brown who delivered for Jack Collins who converted from close range making the score 4-1 at half-time.

The break put a stop to the goal scoring action of the first half, the second half saw Town put up a solid defensive display keeping Wrexham at bay as they controlled the large majority of possession.

The hosts did however complete their victory with their fifth of the afternoon through Collins, a second of the game capping off an impressive display. Another finish from close range sealing a place in the Quarter-Finals.
