Grimsby Town’s Youth Team continued their impressive league campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory away at Rotherham United on Saturday morning, maintaining their unbeaten run and top spot heading into the Christmas period.
The hosts made a fast start and took the lead in the opening minutes, capitalising on a neat pull-back from the right which was calmly dispatched to give the Millers an early advantage. Town responded well, however, and the contest swung decisively on the 20-minute mark when Rotherham were reduced to ten men following a straight red card for their centre-back.
Grimsby wasted little time in making their numerical advantage count. Moments after the dismissal, Carrick delivered a pinpoint free kick into the box, where Graham rose highest to power home a header and restore parity.
Town then began to take full control of proceedings and turned the game on its head when Jalloh fired in from the edge of the area, his effort beating the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. The Mariners continued to dictate the tempo and extended their lead when Peterson’s cross was turned into the net by Onoh to put daylight between the sides.
The victory was sealed late on as Charlie Elliott found the back of the net with a well-taken strike that once again beat the Rotherham goalkeeper to make it 4-1. At the other end, Town goalkeeper Rodgers ensured there was no late drama by producing an excellent save from the penalty spot in the dying moments.
The result sees Grimsby Town’s youngsters remain unbeaten in league action and sitting top of the table at Christmas.
Next up for the Mariners is a Youth Alliance Cup tie against Blackpool, which will take place at Brigg Town’s EC Surfacing Stadium on Saturday 20th December with an 11am kick-off.
