We are proud to join clubs across the EFL in celebrating Raised in the EFL and the work taking place to develop the next generation of footballing talent.
Taking place between 11th and 25th September, Raised in the EFL shines a light on the people, pathways and opportunities helping young players take the next steps in their footballing journeys.
The EFL is a powerhouse of youth development, with its competitive games programme providing players from Under-9 through to Under-21 level with valuable experience as they progress through the game. At Grimsby Town, our Academy plays a key role in developing young footballers and providing them with the opportunity to progress into the professional game.
Recent examples include Elliot Smith and Alex Graham, who both signed their first professional contracts with the Mariners ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Smith has been with Town since Under-8 level and progressed through every age group of the Academy before earning a professional deal. The forward enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Youth Team, scoring more than 20 goals and being named Under-18s Player of the Season.
Graham joined the Club as a first-year scholar after impressing during a trial and went on to captain the Youth Team during his second year. The defender also made his senior debut in the Vertu Trophy during the 2025/26 campaign.
They are the latest in a growing list of young players to make the journey from the Academy into senior football.
Developing the next generation
At the end of the 2024/25 season, Seb Auton and Henry Brown became the latest Academy products to earn professional terms with the Club.
Auton joined the Academy at 13 and made his professional debut in a memorable 3-2 win away at Carlisle United in September 2024. Brown, meanwhile, joined Town at the age of eight and worked his way through the full Academy system before making his First Team debut in the Vertu Trophy and subsequently his league debut.
Kristian Catchpole also signed his first professional contract in August 2026 after joining the Mariners at Under-15 level. The technically gifted midfielder impressed throughout his Academy journey and during pre-season with the First Team, earning a two-year deal with an option for a further year.
Charlie Elliott joined Kristian Catchpole in signing his first professional contract this summer. The 17-year-old defender joined the Mariners after previously spending time in the Academy at Barnsley and has continued to develop through Town’s Academy pathway.
A tall and commanding centre-back, Elliott gained valuable experience with the Youth Team last season before earning the opportunity to take the next step in his development with a one-year professional contract, with the Club holding an option for a further 12 months.
Earlier in the pathway, Cameron Gardner became another Academy success story when he signed a three-year professional contract on his 18th birthday in 2023.
Gardner joined Town’s Academy at 16 before making his professional debut in the EFL Trophy away at Barnsley. His journey highlighted the importance of providing young players with opportunities to train and compete alongside senior professionals.
A pathway from Academy to First Team
These journeys demonstrate the different routes young players can take through the Academy and into senior football. Whether they have been at the Club since childhood, joined during their teenage years or earned an opportunity after impressing in grassroots football, each player’s journey is supported by coaches, staff, teammates and their families.
The EFL’s approach to player development goes beyond what happens on the pitch, with young footballers supported through education, wellbeing and coaching as they develop both as players and as people.
The impact of that work can be seen across the league.
Last season, 290 players made their First Team debuts across the EFL, while 174 Academy players made their professional debuts in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy. U21 players accounted for 23% of all Sky Bet EFL appearances, while 57% of players completing their apprenticeships at EFL Academies received either a professional contract or extended scholarship at the end of the 2024/25 season.
From the Mariners Academy to the Football League
The Club’s Academy has played an important role in the development of numerous players who have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the professional game.
Among those to come through the ranks are Gary Croft, John Oster, Ryan Bennett and Danny Butterfield, each of whom went on to make a significant impact at senior level. Their stories provide inspiration for the next generation of Mariners currently working towards their own First Team opportunities.
