Our Women’s team came from a goal down to win 3-1 away at Gainsborough Trinity Community Women and remain top of their league.

The Mariners started the game slowly and found themselves a goal behind early on after a ball played into the channel found a Gainsborough striker who rounded a defender and finished well from a tight angle.

Despite struggling to get going in the first half, we were gifted the opportunity to bring the scores level a few minutes before the break. A poor back pass put the Gainsborough goalkeeper under pressure and her clearance went straight to Beth Wharton who slid the ball into the opposite side of the goal.

The Mariners started the second period strongly, defending well and keeping the opposition ‘keeper busy at the other end. But it wasn’t until the 80th minute that Hayley Butts’ side finally managed to get their noses in front. Leah Wray’s beautiful left-footed cross found the on-rushing Beth Wharton who finished neatly into the far corner. Then, with just three minute’s left on the clock, Evie Revell latched on to a through pass from Kim Brown and drove it under the diving keeper to make it 3-1 and earn another victory.

Following her first goal for Grimsby Town Women, Evie Revell said: “We were slow to start today and struggled to get into the game. But we were much better in the second half and everyone put in the work, showed heart and desire to grab us a deserved win. Obviously, I was delighted to seal the win with the third goal and my first for the club. Hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Assistant Manager Paul Shaw echoed Evie’s words: “First half we didn’t play as we all know we can, which was disappointing, but after half time, the girls came out and put on a display full of passion and desire, and we fully deserved the winning goals that came towards the end of the second half.”
