The Mariners won empathically on Sunday at Oasis, Wintringham putting six goals past Long Eaton United earning a first win in four outings.
Town made a fast start to proceedings, taking the lead in the sixth minute of the game. Eden Pedersen the scorer meeting a pull back from Lily Jacklin who had managed to make her way down the right wing, beating her marker with a step over before picking out Pedersen on the edge of the area, her right-footed strike curled beyond the keeper and into the far corner.
Just three minutes later the lead was doubled, Pedersen again the scorer with another impressive finish. Grimsby countered from a Long Eaton corner to great effect, Pariss Welsh drove the mariners forward carrying the ball before laying off for Pedersen to find the top right corner for 2-0.
Pedersen came agonisingly close to netting her hattrick in the 18th minute, a powerful drive came back off the crossbar with Grimsby looking to add another before the 20th minute mark. The third did come a little later, Jacklin again involved taking on her marker and playing another incisive pass, this time to Beth Wharton who, at the second attempt from the tightest of angles managed to squeeze an effort inside the post to extend the lead to three.
The same duo combined again as Jacklin provided for Wharton once more, to score her second of the afternoon. The winger played another ball through for Wharton to finish comfortably to put Town out of sight in the first half an hour of the game.
The hosts’ dominance continued as they made it 5-0 in the 34th minute. Another swift counter attack which started from Chloe Grey in the home goal coming out and claiming a cross, releasing Darcie Proud from left-back before her lofted pass put Alisha DeJonge away, the forward cut in on her right foot and from inside the penalty area curled her shot beyond the dive of the keeper.
The free scoring mariners could have quickly extended their lead almost instantly, Danielle Brighton fired an effort over before Pedersen forced the Long Eaton goalkeeper into a fantastic stop diving high to her right to tip a vicious 30-yard effort over the bar.
Town did find a sixth before the break to cap off a breathless first 45 minutes. Olivia Kershaw delivered a corner to the near post, DeJonge met the cross heading down for Brighton who fired a volley into the roof of the net.
The second half was marred by substitutes as both sides made changes disrupting the flow after Grimsby’s dominance of the game in the opening 45 minutes. Hermione Clapham, Evie Revell and Jade Appells all entered the fray for the mariners.
Still in control of the game Grimsby kept possession and still managed to create openings, both Revell and DeJonge saw efforts saved by the visiting goalkeeper.
The final action of the afternoon fell the way of the hosts, Wharton in search of her hattrick went through on goal but she couldn’t beat the keeper for a third time.
Town picked up all three points following a comprehensive first half display ending their run of three straight defeats.
Next up for Grimsby is a second consecutive home game as Gainsborough Trinity Women travel to the Oasis Academy in the County Cup on Sunday 19th November, kick off is 2pm.
