Grimsby Town Women secured their place in the County Cup Quarter Final with a thrilling 6–3 comeback victory over Boston Town at the weekend.
FIRST HALF
The game began at high tempo, with Town carving out an early chance on 5 minutes as Milly North surged through midfield and set up Demi Barai, whose powerful strike cleared the bar.
Against the run of play, Boston Town took the lead with their first attack on 11 minutes and continued to frustrate Town’s rhythm.
Eden Pedersen tested the keeper from range shortly after, before the breakthrough came on 17 minutes – Pedersen lifted a perfectly weighted ball over the defence, North raced onto it and coolly dinked the advancing keeper to level the score.
Boston responded immediately, retaking the lead on 21 minutes and extending it further on 24 minutes, leaving Town 1–3 down and in need of a response.
A triple substitution on 27 minutes injected fresh energy, and the impact was almost instant. On 31 minutes Beth Wharton set up North, who weaved past challenges before slotting home to bring Town back into the contest.
Town continued to probe, and right on the stroke of half-time came a moment of magic.
North danced past two defenders and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner to complete her first-half hat-trick and make it 3–3 at the interval.
SECOND HALF
Town made another change at the break and continued on the front foot.
Shots from Kershaw and North came close, and a series of corners saw Town ramp up the pressure, with North firing a header against the crossbar in the 69th minute.
After several near misses, the breakthrough finally came on 74 minutes.
Wharton, relentless throughout, battled her way into space and fired Town into the lead for the first time.
A stoppage followed as Boston’s keeper was forced off injured, which seemed to halt Boston’s momentum further.
With the visitors tiring, Town pushed to kill the game. In the first minute of stoppage-time, Wharton struck again at the second attempt, making it 5-3 and all but sealing the tie.
Deep into stoppage time, there was still time for one more, North capped a sensational performance with her fourth goal of the match, rounding off a memorable 6–3 victory.
