Cameron McJannet described a “unreal” feeling after his dramatic late winner secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Cambridge United on the road.
In a fiercely contested clash between two promotion-chasing sides, the defender popped up deep into stoppage time to seal all three points and spark wild celebrations among players and supporters alike.
Here’s everything he had to say following the win…
On a dramatic late winner
McJannet admitted the goal may not have been pretty, but it meant everything in the moment.
“I’m not sure about unbelievable finish, but I’ll take every one of them,” he said.
“To score that late on with a scrappy goal and then see the lads’ faces and the crowd, it was unreal.
“I’m absolutely buzzing.”
On a “proper game”
The defender felt the match lived up to its billing as a contest between two top sides.
“I remember thinking early on, this is a proper game,” he said.
“They’re very good and I thought we stuck at it well.
“It was a real good battle.”
On a closely fought contest
McJannet acknowledged the quality of the opposition and how evenly matched the game was.
“You could see how solid they were,” he said.
“They’ve only lost once here all season and you can see why.
“Their centre-backs were very good and as a team they were strong both on and off the ball.”
On Kieran Green’s opener
The defender was full of praise for his teammate after another clinical finish.
“Honestly, what a bloke,” he said.
“The way he heads them – I was a bit jealous of the one at Gillingham!
“He’s been unbelievable.”
On the response to conceding
After being pegged back, McJannet felt the side reacted well and stayed composed.
“At half-time it was about small things,” he said.
“Little details on the press and our shape.
“I think the second half was a lot better.”
On patience in the game
With Cambridge proving difficult to break down, McJannet highlighted the importance of staying disciplined.
“We probably would’ve liked to play out more, but it wasn’t worth the risk with how they pressed,” he said.
“It fed into being patient and just keep grafting.
“We know we’ll create chances.”
On Jackson Smith’s penalty save
A key moment in the second half helped swing momentum back in Town’s favour.
“I remember Jacko saved it and then we had to get through a tough spell,” he said.
“There was a lot of shouting – ‘come on then, let’s have it’.
“That spread through the team and we built on it.”
On the winning moment
McJannet admitted the goal itself may have been scrappy, but the celebrations certainly weren’t.
“It doesn’t matter how it goes in,” he said.
“I’m getting a bit of stick saying I didn’t want to score, but I’ll take it!
“It somehow rolled in and what a feeling.”
On celebrating with the fans
The defender was quick to run to the travelling Mariners following his late strike.
“I lost all composure,” he said.
“I saw the lads lose it and the fans lose it, so I just kept going for a minute or two.
“It wasn’t until kick-off again that I came back down to earth.”
On taking momentum into Saturday
With another huge fixture ahead, McJannet stressed the importance of carrying everything forward.
“We’ve got to take that into Saturday,” he said.
“Not just the good stuff on the ball, but the ugly side as well.”
On family support
The defender also shared a special moment with his family, who were in attendance and had also made the trip to Gillingham on Saturday.
“They travelled down to Gillingham and even brought my 91-year-old grandma,” he said.
“She’s unbelievable, she tires us out!
“She was waving a blow-up fish all game and said she’d had a great day, so she was buzzing.”
With confidence high and momentum building, the Mariners now turn their focus to Saturday, looking to build on a dramatic and hard-earned three points.
