Michael Jolley Post-Macclesfield Town

Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley was pleased that his side did the basics well in a tight game as they beat Macclesfield Town 1-0 in Sky Bet League Two at Blundell Park.

The Mariners returned to winning ways in the league, thanks to Ethan Robson’s 56th-minute strike – his first goal for the club since joining on loan from Sunderland on deadline day.

And Town boss Jolley was pleased that his side took all three points in a tight game.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “It wasn’t the greatest of games, and there were two factors involved in that.

“The wind was probably worse than it appeared to people, and it had a big impact on the first half.

“And it was a match between two teams who know each other extremely well so to some extent they cancelled each other out.

“So the combination of those two factors meant it wasn’t a great game.

“And in those circumstances, it’s important that you do the basics well.

“You defend your goal and you take your chances when they come along, so we’re really pleased with the win.”

And Jolley said Ethan Robson’s performance was his best so far as he opened his account with the Mariners with a superb solo goal from the left.

He said: “It was an excellent goal – I think today was probably his strongest performance for us.

“I really like the way he plays, he’s got a super left foot and it was a terrific goal.

“It was a good forward-run, good composure to come back inside, and it was a great finish with his right foot, so really well done to him.”

Town are back in action on Wednesday as they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Carabao Cup round three (7.45pm).
