We made our first ever trip to the Weston Homes Community Stadium last season.
 
In 2008 Colchester left their Layer Road ground, their home for 71 years, and moved to a new stadium on the edge of town. The new Weston Homes Community Stadium as it has been named in a corporate sponsorship deal, was built by Barr Construction, said to cost around £14m. 
 
Town fans will be housed in the North Stand, which is situated on one side of the stadium.

Concession (65+ & Armed Forces*) – £14
18-21 year old – £15
Under 18 – £11
Under 14 – £4.50

Where to drink.

Hot, cold and alcoholic drinks – along with the normal pies, etc are available in the concourse outlets within the stadium.

With the stadium being on the very outskirts of Colchester, there is little in the choice of pubs. The Dog and Pheasant on Nayland Road, is probably the closest to the stadium, although it is still around 3/4’s of a mile away.

How to get there.
 
From The North and M11
 
Leave the A14 and then join the M11. Come off the M11 at J8 (Stansted Airport/A120) and follow the A120 towards Braintree & Colchester. The A120 then joins the A12 and after passing the stadium on your right, leave the A12 at Junction 28. Turn left at the first roundabout, the turn right into United Way from the second roundabout.
 
From the South
 
Leave the A12 at Junction 28. Turn right at the first roundabout. Go across the bridge and then go straight over the second roundabout, before turning right into United Way from the third roundabout. 
 
Post code for Sat Nav
 
The postcode of the stadium is CO4 5UP, but you may find that your sat nav system does not acknowledge this postcode at present. It is recommended to use CO4 5JS, which is the nearby Rapid Electronics factory.
 

With parking limited in the immediate surrounds of the stadium – similar to the schemes in operation at Brighton and Swansea – visiting fans are advised to use official coach travel services where possible and where advertised with your own club.
 
There are, however, other alternatives.
 
For some supporters though, the car is the only method of getting to the ground.
 
A12 – JUNCTION 28
 
December 2010 saw the new junction serving the Weston Homes Community Stadium open to the public.
 
This means that the stadium is now just seconds from the main A12 trunk road that serves East Anglia.
 
From the south (Ipswich bound carriageway)
 
To access the stadium from the south, turn off at Junction 28, turning right at the first roundabout. Go across the bridge and then go straight over the second roundabout, before turning right into United Way from the third roundabout. You are now at the stadium.
 
From the north (London bound carriageway)
To access the stadium from the north, turn off at Junction 28, turning left at the first roundabout. Turn right into United Way from the second roundabout. You are now at the stadium.
 
The postcode of the stadium is CO4 5UP, but you can also use CO4 5JS, which is the nearby Rapid Electronics factory.
 
1a – Matchday Car Park Permits
 
Please note that there is only limited car parking at the stadium itself, with just under 700 spaces in the main stadium car park. You can book a parking permit via 0845 437 908 or on www.colutickets.com, where we also offer the chance to print your own permit! 
 
Fans are able to use the nearby Park & Ride car park, which is a 5-10 minute walk to the stadium across Boxted Road bridge.
 
1b – Parking Exclusion Zone
 
Both Colchester United and visiting supporters should be aware that the immediate area around the Weston Homes Community Stadium is subject to a Parking Exclusion Zone on matchdays.
 
Covering both existing Clearways and also nearby residential areas, these roads will be marshalled by Colchester United and Essex Police to prevent parking on roads not permitted under the Stadium Travel Plan. 
 
1c – Parking in Colchester
 
Fans coming by car are able to park in town centre car parks, paying the required fee, before joining up with the Matchday Travel Service.
 
There are a number of town centre car parks if you wish to sample the town itself before the game, whilst there is also an extensive pay car park at Colchester Train Station.
 
If parking in a town centre car park, visiting fans can buy a ticket on the number 65 bus on Head Street to the train station (a five to ten minute journey), where they can then link up with the shuttle bus service.
 
There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the town centre and visiting fans may find that getting to the ground in this way is an enjoyable one.
 
By Train
 
Visiting fans arriving by train to Colchester Station are able to take advantage of our shuttle bus service, which costs just £2.50 for a return journey.
 
Upon arrival at Colchester Station, fans should turn left out of Colchester Station and hop on the shuttle buses. The shuttle bus starts at 1pm on a Saturday matchday (6pm midweek) and takes less than ten minutes to get to the ground!
 
Celebrity Watch 

Famous Referee, Ken Ashton, the man who dreamt up the idea for red and yellow caution cards was born in Colchester. Royal surgeon, Sir William Gull also hails from these parts. A royal conspiracy theory created in the 1970s alleged that Gull knew the identity of Jack the Ripper, or even that he himself was the murderer. Although dismissed by scholars, its dramatic nature let the theory evolve and remain popular among producers of fictional works, despite Gull being 72 years old and of ill health when the murders were committed.
