Grimsby Town interim manager Anthony Limbrick offered an honest assessment on his side’s 3-0 Sky Bet League Two defeat to Swindon Town at Blundell Park.

Eoin Doyle broke the deadlock on 10 minutes before Jerry Yates scored a goal either side of the break to give Richie Wellens’s side all three points.

And Limbrick admitted Town weren’t good enough, as they were comfortably beaten by the league leaders.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, he said: “Swindon are an excellent side – we highlighted their strengths and I thought they really delivered them today.

“They scored one goal on the counter-attack, they passed the ball well, and their midfield three probably dominated our midfield three.

“We had a game plan today, but we were unable to execute it.

“I thought we were desperately unlucky with the first two goals, however, I thought Swindon were very good today and stopped us from playing.

 

“They were one of the better sides we’ve played this season – probably them and Crewe Alexandra are the two better sides that we’ve seen here so far.

“So credit to Swindon for their sixth win in a row because I think they really deserved it.

“We didn’t play well today. I didn’t think we passed the ball well enough, and we lost that midfield battle.

“They pressed us better than we pressed them so we were disappointed with that performance.

“They used the system better than us. They were 4-3-3 like us but they created the width better, they got wide, and they spread a lot quicker than us.

“I thought their forward players did better than our forwards, and I think they did play the system better than us.”

Limbrick was pleased to see winger Max Wright return to the team as a substitute, following two months out with a thigh injury.

 

He said: “It was good for him. We’d have loved to have brought him on earlier, or started him, but we didn’t feel he was ready physically because he’d been out for a long time.

“We didn’t want to be unfair to him and push him for too long because he’s only had two full days of training this week.

“We knew it was a risk even bringing him on for 25 minutes but he came on and did what he does well.

“He gave us good energy and provided a bit more width for us as well, which I think can help us moving forward.”
