Doug Tharme Recognised with Community Awards

We are delighted to announce that defender Doug Tharme has been recognised for his outstanding contribution away from the pitch by receiving the PFA Community Champion Award.

The honour celebrates Doug’s exceptional commitment to supporting the local community throughout the 2025/26 season, during which he completed the most community engagements across the squad.

As an ambassador, Doug has played a leading role in strengthening the connection between the Men’s First Team and Grimsby Town Foundation, helping to engage and motivate teammates to take part in community initiatives. His influence has contributed to a record number of player appearances in the community this season, including appearances made by players from the women’s first team.

Doug has also been instrumental in developing a new community project, with plans now in place for a funding application that could deliver further positive impact for the town.

The PFA Community Champion Award recognises players who have made work with communities and good causes central to their role as professional footballers, highlighting the powerful difference players can make beyond the game.

Throughout the season, Doug has supported a wide range of Foundation initiatives. Earlier this year, he visited Littlecoates Primary Academy as part of World Book Day celebrations, reading to pupils and speaking about the importance of literacy and football.

He has also supported Football vs Homophobia activity by joining inclusion workshops in local schools to discuss respect, allyship and challenging discrimination in sport and everyday life.

He also spent time visiting local families at the Hospice during the Christmas period, helping spread festive cheer, while regularly supporting Grimsby Town Foundation half-term courses by meeting participants, joining in with activities, and inspiring young people.

Doug’s willingness to give his time to inspire young people and support meaningful causes has made a lasting impact across the community.

Polly Bancroft, CEO of Grimsby Town Football Club, said: “Doug has been an outstanding ambassador for both the Football Club and the Foundation this season.

“He has given his time generously, embraced every opportunity to support our community programmes and shown a genuine passion for making a difference to people across the area.

“Whether visiting schools, attending holiday courses, supporting important inclusion campaigns, or spending time with families at the Hospice, Doug has represented the values of this Club brilliantly.

“This award is thoroughly deserved recognition for his commitment, humility and the positive impact he continues to make both on and off the pitch.”

Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club and Grimsby Town Foundation congratulates Doug on this thoroughly deserved award.
