Green Signs For The Mariners

Grimsby Town Football Club is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with FC Halifax Town for the transfer of central midfielder, Kieran Green for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has penned a two-year contract with the Mariners with the option of a third and joined up with his new teammates and manager for the first time this morning at Cheapside.

Green spent the majority of his career in the North East, starting on his footballing path at Hartlepool United, enjoying loan spells at Spennymoor Town, Frickley Athletic and Gateshead, before making his move to the Heed permanent in 2017.

After a year at the club and two separate loan spells to Blyth Spartans, his move to the club was made permanent in June 2018. After eight goals in 56 appearances for Blyth, Green made the move to York City in 2019, making 36 appearances before the season was curtailed. In August 2020, Green signed for FC Halifax Town, where his performances began to attract attention from teams in the Football League.

Following 55 appearances for the Shaymen, Paul Hurst has finally managed to secure the services of his number one target and is excited to work with him going forward.

“I am delighted. In truth, it’s been a long process. We have kind of worked on it all summer and at times, felt like we were getting close to a deal and then wasn’t but the most important thing is that he has now signed, he’s here and he has been my main target for the summer. I have been very impressed by him last season, there was a bit about him before then, but last season he really stepped up when he was fit.

“He brings a will to win. A desire. He can play, but I have said to him and his representative, the biggest thing for me is his character. I think he is very much kind of old school and he is a leader, he certainly leads by example on the pitch and we will see if that is also in terms of in the dressing room but I am sure it is. I think he is a genuine person who likes football and loves to play football, I would say he is different to a lot of the players who come through now, he brings physicality and energy and a real desire to win.

“I can remember watching him against Notts County when they won the game at home 3-2, they were down to 10 men, he ended up playing centre half, you could see he was absolutely out on his feet but his sheer will shone through, you could feel that coming through and that’s a great attribute to have and something that fits us really well and I am really looking forward to getting started with him.”

Green also spoke exclusively to gtfc.co.uk this morning, after penning his contract with the club and is looking forward to testing himself at the next level.

“I am delighted with the move. It’s a great club and I know a lot about Grimsby as a club, I am looking forward to it, getting to know the town a bit more and hopefully having a successful season. When we played Grimsby away last season, I was blown away by the support for the team so I can’t wait to be a part of that atmosphere!”.

Green was part of the FC Halifax Town side which finished the 21/22 National League campaign in the Playoff positions, whilst boasting the strongest defensive record in the League.

“I really enjoyed my time at Halifax. I think it was a good environment for me to go and progress and I think that’s what I did. In terms of our season last season, we fell short at the final hurdle which was obviously disappointing, but hopefully, they go on and go one better this year.

“I’m a central midfielder. I give everything I have got, I like to take the ball off of the opponent’s good players and give it to our good players, I am that sort of player! Other than that, I just want to give my absolute everything for this club. I would like to score a few goals and help the team in that way, but just in general, all I want to do is help this team and be successful. As long as we are winning games, then I am happy and we must be doing something right collectively”.
