GTFC Women Secure Cup Progression

The Mariners met local rivals in the first round of the County Cup taking confidence from the earlier win against the same opposition in the league only a matter of weeks ago.

Grimsby Town women walked away with their name in the hat for the next round with a routine 2-0 win.

The Mariners took the opportunity to ring the changes in a break away from the league campaign with young Lily Jacklin making her first start, she repaid that faith with the opening goal after 15 minutes with an effort that looped over the Grimsby Borough goalkeeper.

A second soon followed through the ever-impressive Alisha Dejonge who fired one from the edge of the area that proved too hot to handle for the Borough Goalkeeper.

That was all in terms of goals in what was a scrappy affair with The Mariners keeping the majority of the possession and Borough looking to break through on the counter but thwarted by a sturdy Town back line, After 70 minutes Grimsby Borough was reduced to 10 players due to a yellow card (Sin Bin) awarded for dissent but still The Mariners couldn’t extend their lead due to some robust defensive work and some good save from the Borough Keeper.

Following her first start and the opening goal Lily Jacklin, was in a buoyant mood “I really enjoyed making my first start and getting my first goal for Town, obviously still things to work on but looking forward to keeping the momentum going into our next game where I can hopefully carry-on scoring and providing for my teammates”

Manager Hayley Cox stated “It was a competitive game between both teams looking to progress in the cup, Always pleased to finish a game with a clean sheet due to a brilliant solid effort from the backline including player of the match Harriet Dalton who let nothing past all game. Really pleased for Lily grabbing her first goal for the club and Alisha took her goal well with a good finish. We felt comfortable when we had possession and created many scoring opportunities so credit to Borough defence that the game finished 2-0. We now have a week break before we return for our next fixture away at Gainsborough on 30th October”.
