Hatton’s penalty sees Youth Team battle to draw with Bradford City

Grimsby Town’s Youth Team faced Bradford City on Saturday morning in a closely fought match at Cheapside, with an audacious panenka penalty from midfielder Charlie Hatton enough to earn a point against Bradford City.

The visitors Bradford City were the only team to have beaten Town in league action so far this season, with a 3-1 win earlier in the campaign.

Town started well but the visitors were more than up for the challenge with long range efforts in the opening exchanges forcing both goalkeepers into action.

Town remained steadfast and it was Charlie Hatton’s calmly dinked penalty which opened the scored on the half-hour mark after forward, Elliot Smith, was hauled down in the Bantam’s penalty area.

However, the visitors responded quickly when a deflection from a cross found the back of the Town net five minutes after to make it level the scoring 1-1 going into the half-time interval.

The second half was played in a similar vein, with the Mariners having the better of the chances, with Hayden Rogers keeping the scores level.

Neither side could find a break-through with the score remaining 1-1 and both sides settling for a hard-earned point.

Neil Wood’s Mariners now head to Chesterfield on Tuesday morning for their next league game, followed by Burton Albion on Saturday at Bradley FDC.
