Mansfield Town 2-1 Grimsby Town U18s – Youth Team Match Report

Grimsby Town youth team fell to defeat to league leaders Mansfield Town as they lost 2-1 in the EFL North East Youth Alliance.

The young Mariners started the game well with some slick passing moves.

Joe Starbuck came close as he attempted to lob the goalkeeper, but his shot landed in his hands.

Luis Adlard also had a chance to put Town ahead, but his effort flashed wide of the post.

But it was Lennon Stead who opened the scoring after some neat interchange and a great through ball from Adlard, for Stead to calmly slot home giving town the 1-0 lead on the 20-minute mark.

Town continued to pile on the pressure, with Evan Khouri hitting the post before Owoeye saw his follow-up saved by the goalkeeper.

And Starbuck had another shot on goal as he looked to double Town’s lead, but he struck just wide.

The Stags struck back against the run of play when they countered with a delightful finish to make it 1-1 at half time.

Mansfield started the stronger in the second half and scored immediately following a corner which was struck home in the 50th minute.

Town continued in the same vein as the first half, with some neat passing football, and Owoeye went close again as did Adlard on a few occasions.

Unfortunately for the Mariners they came out on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline, despite an excellent performance.

Town travel to Salford City in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday (12pm).
