Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of defender, Liam Gibson on loan from Premier League side, Newcastle United until January 2020.
The 22-year-old left back joins us from The Mapgies after spending a period of the 2018/19 season on loan at Sky Bet League One side, Accrington Stanley.
Speaking exclusively to iFollow Mariners, Gibson gave an insight into the kind of player GTFC fans can expect to see this coming season.
“I’m a defender, a left-back. I would describe myself as a powerful, athletic full-back that likes to get forward, but I can defend as well which I think is important for full-backs now”, said Gibson.
Gibson is highly regarded at Newcastle United, the club he has been at since the age of 9, becoming an integral part of the club’s development squad in previous years. Gibson went on to earn his first selection for the First Team squad in March 2016, being named on the bench for their 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.
Following his move, Gibson described his initial thoughts towards making the move to Blundell Park following on from his experience last season and explained the influence the manager had on his decision.
“He has been brilliant ever since I heard that there was an interest”, said Gibson. “He’s pitched it unbelievably and I’ve played against Grimsby last season for the Newcastle Under 23’s and even though it was only a Checkatrade game, I could feel the passion coming from the fans and as soon as I heard of the interest, I was desperate to get myself down here”.
>Manager, Michael Jolley spoke to gtfc.co.uk this afternoon following our behind closed doors friendly away at Hull City regarding the signing of Gibson.
Liam will give us excellent competition in the full back areas. He played extremely well against us for Newcastle U23’s last season and then performed well in League One for Accrington Stanley in his last loan”, said Jolley.
“He is highly regarded at Newcastle and we are grateful to Shola Ameobi, Ben Dawson and the other staff at Newcastle for helping to make this move happen. Welcome to Blundell Park, Liam”.
