Next up for David Artell’s men is our final home tie of the month against Newport County in Sky Bet League Two
The Exiles currently sit 16th in the league and have been a League Two side since their promotion from the Conference Premier League (Now the National League) in 2013. Their highest finish since then has been in the 2020-21 season where they finished 5th and secured a place in the play-offs, where they beat Forest Green Rovers before a 1-0 loss to Morecambe in the final at Wembley. In the reverse fixture at Rodney Parade in November, a Jordan Wright penalty save earned Town a valuable point in a 0-0 stalemate in South Wales.
Over the 37 games played this season, The Exiles have won 13, drawn seven and lost 17. Their recent form has seen them win two games this month, against Gillingham and Harrogate Town, but they haven’t earned any points on the road since their 3-0 win away at play-off chasing Crewe in early February.
David Artell previews the visit of Newport County
Newport County are coached by 46-year-old Nelson Jardim, who took charge of the South Wales club ahead of the 2024-25 season after initially joining their coaching staff while they were in the hunt for a new Head Coach. His previous coaching roles have seen him in his home country, Portugal, where he most recently coached C.S. Maritimo B.
A key player for the Exiles will be midfielder Shane McLoughlin. The Irishman joined the Exiles in the summer of 2023 and if he features tomorrow, will make his 75th appearance for the South Wales club. Primarily a right-back, the former Irish youth international can also play comfortably at left-back or in midfield, where he’s been operating more recently. His experience, as well as his composure on the ball and ability to chip in with a goal or an assist makes him a reliable figure in Nelson Jardim’s squad. He’s a threat on set pieces and can hold onto the ball well in tight positions.
There is limited availability across most stands for tomorrow’s game, apart from the Main Stand and behind the goal in the Osmand Stand where there are still plenty of tickets available. Tickets can be purchased by coming into the Blundell Park Ticket Office or visiting our online Ticket Portal.
