MATCH REPORT | YOUNG MARINERS DEFEAT CHESTERFIELD

A Charlie Clements double and a Jack Collins strike earned our young Mariners three points against Chesterfield on home soil in league action yesterday afternoon.

Neil Woods made three changes to the side that drew with Accrington Stanley on Saturday, with Alfie Foy, Harry Shipstone and Clements securing a place in the starting XI over Charlie Hatton, Fortune Onoh and Corey Foster.

Town started the tie brightly and went close on a number of occasions early on, through Henry Brown, Carlo Midwinter and Clements; the latter who’s combination play saw him bought down in the box and a penalty awarded.

Clements stepped up to take the spot kick and dispatched it confidently to give Town a deserved lead.

The versatile forward got his and Grimsby’s second of the game shortly after the first and after a neat pull back, he calmly slotted the ball past the Spireites’ Keeper to double our advantage.

The young Mariners controlled the remainder of the first-half and were unlucky not to increase the scoreline, but a few strong stops from the Chesterfield shot-stopper saw the game remain 2-0 at the break.

The visitors came out on the front foot after the restart and despite Grimsby still controlling large parts of posession, got a goal back to decrease the defecit.

Town made it three when some superb team play resulted in Jack Collins getting the last touch to put the ball in the back of the net.

Chesterfield scored a conciliation goal but the hosts were able to keep out any more danger and seal the three points.

Next up for Town is a short trip down the M180 to face Doncaster Rovers on Saturday (11am kick-off).

Town: Rogers, Axcell, Graham, Foy, Storr, Shipstone, Collins, Clements, Midwinter (Foster, 75′), Brown, Rennardson (Jalloh, 83′)

Unused subs: Onoh, Carrick, Hatton
