We are pleased to announce our second signing of the summer as defender Toby Mullarkey from Rochdale on a two-year deal following the Mariners triggering a release clause in his contract.

A January signing for his former club, the 27-year-old defender previously played over a hundred matches for Altrincham, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the National League during his time there.

Mullarkey is a product of the well-regarded Crewe Alexandra Academy and came through the ranks of our fellow Sky Bet League Two club before signing his first professional contract.

Prior to joining Altrincham, the Warrington-born defender had a period on loan with Leek Town before a three-season spell with Nantwich Town.

While Mullarkey is predominantly a centre-back, he has been known to play anywhere across the backline and started on the right-hand side of a three-man defence for Rochdale when they visited Blundell Park in March.

On his second recruit of pre-season, manager Paul Hurst said: “He’s a very good player in my opinion and is a good size. He can play centre-back but can also play right-back.

“Certainly, if we went to a three, he can play that outside centre-back extremely well or centrally. He’s comfortable on the ball and is probably a more modern-day centre back because of how good he is on the ball.

“It was no secret that we were close to bringing him in back in January and we were a little frustrated that it didn’t happen but, ultimately, we’ve got him on board now and I’m pleased.”

After signing for the Mariners, Mullarkey added: “I’m delighted to be here. It’s a massive club and I’m really pleased to get it over the line. I know the club’s ambitions and what it means to the fans so I’m delighted to be on board.
