Town Women booked their place in the second round of the Lincolnshire County Women’s Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sleaford Town Rangers Women on Sunday afternoon.
The Mariners began their County Cup campaign at The BPH Stadium, Eslaforde Park, and took the lead after 18 minutes through Scarlett Norman, before Beth Wharton sealed the win with a superb strike from distance in the second half.
Town started brightly and looked to create opportunities, with Beth Wharton delivering a ball from the right that was met by Abbie Emslie at the far post, although her effort was blocked. The subsequent corners were also cleared as Sleaford worked hard to keep the visitors at bay.
The breakthrough arrived in the 18th minute when Emslie won a free-kick. Wharton delivered into the box, where Norman was on hand to finish and score her first goal for the Club, giving the Mariners a deserved lead.
Town continued to control possession for much of the first half, although the windy conditions made it difficult to create clear-cut opportunities in the final third. Brooke Mayall tried her luck from distance just before the break, but her effort sailed over the crossbar.
The Mariners went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage after a disciplined first-half performance.
Town made five changes at the interval, with Rowen Crawshaw, Pariss Welsh, Sophie Gray, Leah Wray and Milly North introduced as the visitors looked to maintain their momentum.
Sleaford registered their first shot on target shortly after the restart, but Jasmin Lacey was on hand to make a comfortable save.
The Mariners continued to threaten at the other end, with Crawshaw and Emslie combining in the 66th minute before the latter’s effort was held by the goalkeeper. Emslie then went close again three minutes later, shooting over after exchanging passes with North.
Town’s pressure eventually paid off in the 75th minute. Dejonge found Emslie, who laid the ball into Wharton’s path, and the midfielder produced an excellent finish from distance to double the Mariners’ advantage.
Grimsby continued to push for further goals in the closing stages, with Crawshaw seeing an effort deflected wide and North having a goal ruled out for offside late on.
However, two goals proved enough as the Mariners saw out the game to secure a 2-0 victory and progress to the second round of the Lincolnshire County Women’s Cup.
Norman and Wharton were the goalscorers on the afternoon, while the Supporters’ Player of the Match award was shared between Norman and Mayall following their contributions to the victory.
