PREVIEW | STOCKPORT COUNTY (H)

The Mariners play host to league leaders Stockport County at Blundell Park tomorrow (kick-off 3pm), off the back from last weekend’s goalless draw at Accrington.

In a much-spirited performance, Town were held to a point-a-piece at the Wham Stadium after some heroics from Stanley keeper Radek Vitek who denied Danny Rose from close range in the final moments. In this game Town will face stiff opposition in league leaders Stockport County who are targeting their second league title in three seasons.

Team News

Head Coach David Artell told the press yesterday that defender Doug Tharme has been monitored accordingly since picking up a hamstring injury against Tranmere Rovers and could be set for a return to the squad to face Stockport. Forward Rekeil Pyke has been back in training but won’t be pushed into a rushed return. New signings Liam Smith, Denver Hume and Curtis Thompson all could be in line to make their home debuts at Blundell Park!

Stockport County

These two sides last met in last October when Stockport just edged Town in a 3-2 win at Edgeley Park. The hosts found themselves two goals to the good inside ten minutes before a goal from Donovan Wilson in the first half and a second half penalty from Gavan Holohan brought the Mariners level. Louie Barry got his second of the game from the penalty spot which sealed the win for County.

Stockport are currently managed by Dave Challinor who has been at the club since November 2021 and has overseen a turn in fortunes for the Cheshire side having guided them to the National League title in 2022 and then in their first season back in the EFL he took them all the way to the play-off final before narrowly missing out to Carlisle United on penalties.

Form

County come into this game unbeaten in nine out of their last ten league matches and out of their 13 away league matches they’ve played this season they’ve won seven of those fixtures.

In the Hatters last league outing they played out a one all draw with North Yorkshire side Harrogate Town with both goals coming in the first half.

Saturday’s visitors have Isaac Olaofe as their current top goal scorer having scored 15 goals in 32 games played this season.
