Rotherham United 2-2 Grimsby Town U18s – Youth Team Match Report

Neil Woods’s Grimsby Town youth team drew 2-2 with Rotherham United in the EFL North East Youth Alliance.

Lennon Stead and Luis Adlard gave the young Mariners a two-goal lead, before the Millers fought back to ensure the spoils were shared.

The game was open at the start, with chances at both ends – Rotherham were the first to go close and could have found the net on a few occasions.

Town responded, with efforts from Adlard and Ayodeji Owoeye, but couldn’t really trouble the Millers’ goalkeeper.

Town settled into the game well, but couldn’t finish off any of their neat-possession moves, leaving the score goalless at half time.

The second half had more action – Town had plenty of chances again, Adlard went close, and Lewis Derrick hit the post with a free-kick.

But it was Adlard who opened the scoring with some neat individual play, skipping past a few players to bend one into the top corner.

Town made it 2-0 minutes later after Joe Starbuck was brought down in the box – Stead had his penalty saved, but tapped in the rebound.

Town could have wrapped the game up, with a few more chances, through Adlard and Painter.

But it was Rotherham who got a goal back, before finding an equaliser moments later.

A 2-2 draw was a fair result after both sides had good spells and plenty of chances.

The two teams face each other again at Cheapside tomorrow (kick-off 12pm).
