Sky Bet League Two 2019-20 Preview: Swindon Town

Manager Richie Wellens will be targeting the play-offs with Swindon Town in Sky Bet League Two 2019-20.

Mid-table last season

The Robins finished comfortably mid-table last term as they ended the campaign in 13th-place, on 64 points – seven outside the play-off places.

It was a steady second season in League Two for Swindon, who were relegated from Sky Bet League One in 2017.

And Wellens’ men looked like they might sneak into the play-offs as the season drew to a close, but a six-game winless run in April dashed their hopes of a return to the third tier.

The former Manchester United youth team midfielder became Swindon boss in November 2018, after Phil Brown was sacked at the County Ground.

The Robins had a somewhat inconsistent season under Wellens, but still came close to securing a place in the play-offs.

And the 39-year-old will now be looking to guide Swindon into the top seven, and ultimately seal promotion back to League One, in the 2019-20 season.

Players

Swindon have made a number of impressive summer signings so far, including former Leyton Orient and Doncaster Rovers centre-back Mathieu Baudry.

Former Crystal Palace and Barnsley left-back Ezekiel Fryers also made the switch to the County Ground, alongside Tyler Reid and loanee Adam May.

And the Robins already have a number of first-team players, including Michael Doughty, Keshi Anderson, Kaiyne Woolery, Jermaine McGlashan, and Toumani Diagouraga, under contract ahead of the new campaign.

But Swindon also released 11 players, including former Town loanee Olly Lancashire, this summer, with ex-Premier League midfielder Matt Taylor retiring from football.
