Four first-half goals from Abbie Emslie and a hat-trick from Lily Jacklin were amongst yesterday’s goals as the Mariners put 12 past Boston United Ladies to ease into the second round of the County Women’s Cup.
Emslie’s double brace with an added strike from Beth Wharton saw the Mariners 5-0 up at the break, before Jacklin’s hat trick, as well as goals from Laura Flecknor, Dani Brighton, Izzy Fawcett and Holly Smith added to the tally.
Ben Challen made a few changes to his side’s well-fought victory away at Arnold Eagles last week, with Chloe Gray taking her place back in between the sticks.
Pariss Welsh and Ray Swallow both earned themselves starting positions as Jacklin returned to the bench after a few weeks on the sidelines.
Town piled on the pressure from the first minute and created some frustratingly close chances in the opening stages of the game.
Abbie Emslie’s first strike came with eleven minutes on the clock. The ball fell to the attacker in front of goal and despite being surrounded by Boston defenders, she managed to bumble the ball into the back of the net for the opener.
The 23-year-old got her brace with two goals in two minutes as she powerfully struck the ball past the Boston shot-stopper to double our advantage.
It didn’t take long for Emslie to get her hat-trick. This time, Wharton played the ball into the middle of the box, and it was slotted home by the number seven for her third of the game.
Wharton turned from provider to goalscorer as she unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box and Emslie added a fifth before the break from inside the area.
SECOND HALF
Substitute Izzy Fawcett got our sixth just minutes into the second-half as she shot through a sea of black and orange shirts to find the back of the net.
It was Jacklin’s turn to put her shooting boots on as she scored the game’s next three goals and opened her own account for the season.
Her first two goals were finished neatly from close-range, but her third was the pick of the bunch as she opened her body and powerfully struck the ball into the roof of the net from outside the box for her hat-trick.
Flecknor added our tenth as she drove with the ball into the final third and slotted home, before captain Dani Brighton got herself amongst the goalscorers and only had the keeper to beat as she placed the ball into the back of the net.
Smith got the game’s final goal and a well-deserved one as she fired from a tight angle to round off a dominant performance and put the Mariners in the hat for the next round of the competition.
The Mariners are next in action on Sunday as they host Buxton Women at Clee Fields in a 2pm kick-off.
