Women’s First Team Report | Mariners score six and end season on a high

Our Women’s First Team concluded the 2024-25 season with a 6-0 win and a clean sheet over Belper Town at Clee Fields.

A Ray Swallow brace, as well as goals from Alisha Dejonge, Beth Wharton, Harriet Dalton and Lily Jacklin saw Ben Challen’s side record their second consecutive 6-0 win on home soil as they ended the campaign on a high.

The home side were creating chances from the get-go and Wharton had the ball in the back of the net inside ten minutes, but the offside flag was up.

Town almost found themselves a goal down a minute later, when a Belper Town forward lobbed Chloe Thorpe in the Mariners’ net, but Leah Wray defended excellently and was able to track back to conduct a goal-line clearance.

The opportunities on goal continued to come for the home side, but the deadlock wasn’t broken until less than 10 minutes before the break through Dejonge.

A great delivery from Wharton allowed our number ten to bring the ball down before finishing well and giving Town a deserved advantage at the half-way stage.

A speculative effort from Harriet Dalton saw us double our lead shortly after the restart. The ball bobbled and hit the underside of the bar before eventually nestling in the back of the net to increase our cushion to two goals.

Kloe Green created one of the best chances of the game to make it three, dribbling the ball round multiple yellow and black shirts before striking, but a visiting defender was able to nip the ball away at the final opportunity.

Laura Flecknor put the ball on a plate for Wharton to strike cleanly into the back of the net for our third, bringing her season total to an impressive 35 goals.

The next two goals came from substitute Ray Swallow, the first of which was set up superbly by Abbie Emslie and the youngster’s second coming only a minute later to complete her first brace in senior football.

Lily Jacklin got Grimsby’s sixth from another Flecknor assist; the winger taking the ball in her stride and slotting home confidently to round off a dominant victory.
