Grimsby Town’s Youth Team travelled to Solihull Moors in the u19 National League Cup 2nd Round on Wednesday.
Both teams started well and had spells of possession in the opening exchanges without really hurting the opponent in the attacking half.
Town went closest first when a quick counter-attack saw Adlard’s shot saved well at the near post, but at the other end, Solihull created the exact same opportunity which resulted in the same outcome.
Solihull started to gain more possession, albeit deeper in their own half but Town stayed patient and pounced on the errors and on the 25th minute, Milner opened the scoring for Town capitalising on a loose pass, beating his man and slotting past the keeper.
Town created a few more half-chances when Khouri flashed the ball across the goal and Brown shot well from distance, at the other end, Jacobs made a smart near-post save from range to keep the Moors out.
The second half was much of the same but Town did gain more possession and get more opportunities but it was Solihull who equalised with some good individual play and a neat finish to round off a good move.
Town continued to press forward and Adlard again went close as did Scott both seeing their efforts well saved. Town did regain the lead when a good solo run from Tomlinson saw him brought down in the box, he then stepped up and dispatched the penalty to give Town a 2-1 lead after 60 minutes.
Goundry then went close with a header and Tone continued to add the pressure but couldn’t find a third, and in the 95th minute, Town conceded a penalty which was dispatched to make the game 2-2 and go straight to a penalty shootout.
Town scored 5 from 5 and Solihull missed their penultimate kick to give Town the 5-4 win on penalties and progress to the Quarter Finals.
Next up for Town is league action away at Scunthorpe on Saturday at 11am.
