Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of former Port Vale midfielder, Scott Burgess until the end of the season, subject to National League approval.
Burgess progressed through the Academy system at Bury FC, penning his first professional contract with the club in the summer of 2015, 12 months after making his debut in a draw away to Morecambe at the age of 16.
After multiple loan spells at the likes of Macclesfield Town, Wrexham, York City and a short spell at Norwegian club Bergsoy, Burgess signed for Port Vale in May 2019, joining his former manager John Askey who had previously managed him at The Silkmen. During his time at the Valiants, Burgess made a total of 62 appearances in all competitions, scoring on four occasions and was also nominated for the club’s Young Player of the Year for the 2019/20 campaign.
We caught up with our latest signing this afternoon following his transfer to the club and his first training session with his new teammates.
“I spoke to my agent a couple of days ago about it potentially happening and it came around just as I was driving home from training with Port Vale that it was all pretty much sorted, so I am delighted and looking forward to getting going. As a player I like to keep the ball, I am possession-based, try to get on the ball, create for the team and also contribute with some goals.
“I spoke to Danny [Amos] last night while I was trying to get everything sorted, gave him a little text last night and spoke to him today so that was nice, but I also know [Shaun] Pearson, [Jordan] Maguire-Drew from my time on loan at Wrexham and Crookesy from Port Vale, so it’s always nice coming to a new place where you know a few of the faces.”
We also spoke to manager Paul Hurst who believes the midfielder will bring plenty of quality to the squad.
“I think he will bring some quality on the ball, some creativity. I don’t think his goalscoring record is probably as good as it could be, something that I am sure he wants to add to his game and he is definitely capable. He’s another I have had tabs on for the last couple of months, talking about the possibility.
“I saw him for Port Vale when they were challenging in the playoffs, they beat a really good Crewe team and that’s probably the first time that he really caught my eye a couple of seasons ago. Both lads so far have been really keen to join and it’s nice to get that. Sometimes players or agents are not keen on these deals happening but these two so far have been easy to get done because of their enthusiasm to come and try and help us for the remainder of the season”.
