Andy Cook: “We’ll Take Each Game as It Comes”

With the FA Cup fourth round clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers looming on Sunday, Andy Cook has been reflecting on the Mariners’ recent form, his attacking mindset, and the excitement of playing in front of a sold-out Blundell Park.

The striker was quick to praise the team’s collective effort following Wednesday’s strong performance.

“It was good. The lads worked hard, we knew what we were up against, and we knew it was going to be a tough game. We had to win our battles, and I think we did that all night,” he said.

Cook says confidence is high as the Mariners prepare to face Premier League opposition.

“We’re on an unbeaten run, all the lads are full of confidence. We want to go into the game with that mindset and see what happens.”

A Forward’s Mindset

Cook also spoke about his role leading the line, noting the importance of taking chances when they come.

“As a centre forward, you want opportunities. I like the way we play, and I think I’d still get chances against anyone. The main thing is to take them at the end of the day.”

He drew confidence from his experience earlier this season against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

“It was good to get a chance and even better to score. Now, coming into this game, I know the mindset I need. The lads have faced Premier League teams before, so they know what to do.”

Keeping Focus

For Cook, the key to tackling top-flight opposition is treating it like any other match, while harnessing the experience of the squad.

“I take each game as it comes. It’s always exciting to get a Premier League tie, but we’ve got to focus on ourselves and see it as another game.”

He also reflected on settling into the team since his arrival, noting the support from his teammates.

“I’ve settled in well. I knew a few lads before signing, so it made life easy for me.”

Balancing Goals With Team Play

Cook admits the goals haven’t yet come in the league, but he’s confident it’s only a matter of time.

“It feels like I’m doing everything but score. If we keep creating chances and playing the way we do, I’m sure I’ll get a goal soon.”

He emphasised that individual milestones are secondary to the team’s success.

“I want to score, but when the team’s playing well I know I’ll get chances. If we keep winning like we have, it doesn’t matter about me – we just have to play our game.”

The Magic Of Blundell Park

Cook is well aware of the advantage a full Blundell Park can provide, particularly for big cup games.

“It’s massive. You always want the fans on side – that extra man. The noise, the atmosphere, it can really lift the team. Who knows what could happen?”
