Grimsby Town forward Charles Vernam’s third strike against Colchester United has been nominated for the EFL Sky Bet League Two goal of the month award for February.

The 23-year-old scored a superb hat-trick as Ian Holloway’s Mariners beat the U’s 3-2 at Colchester Community Stadium.

And Vernam’s third strike, as he dribbled from the edge of his own area before beating goalkeeper Dean Gerken, has been nominated for February’s goal of the month gong.

In a press release, the EFL said: “It wasn’t just the distance Vernam covered from just outside his own area, but the speed at which he did so, slaloming through three defenders before sliding home a precision shot.”
