Martyn Woolford has admitted that he’s been relishing the opportunity to play in Grimsby Town’s midfield three in recent weeks.

The 33-year-old started, alongside Jake Hessenthaler and Elliot Embleton, in the Mariners’ midfield in their two previous Sky Bet League Two games as Michael Jolley’s side beat Newport County and MK Dons at Blundell Park.

And Woolford, who has traditionally been a winger throughout his career, is enjoying the transition into the centre of the park, and hopes for more of the same as the Mariners prepare for Saturday’s clash with Yeovil Town at Huish Park.

Speaking exclusively on iFollow Mariners, he said: “I did feel like I’d done okay myself so it’s good to be back out there for a start.

“And playing well and contributing to wins is something that I need to do to stay in the team.

“So it’s a pleasing one for me to be involved in the last two, especially when they’ve both been wins, so we’re hoping to keep that going – both as a team, and personally.

“I really enjoy it in there. I played a part in a more central role towards the end of last season, and we had success in it, and I felt like I was playing good football and enjoying it.

“When the chance came to come more in the midfield I welcomed it with open arms because I do like it in there.

“You can dictate play a little bit more in there when you need to, and calm things down when they need to be calmed down.”

And Woolford praised the 3-5-2 formation which Town boss Jolley has adopted in recent weeks.

He said: “It’s a really attacking way to play – there’s a lot of freedom within the system that he’s wanting us to play.

“So the lads are free to go roaming all over the pitch, knowing that their teammates are going to fill in.

“It’s getting used to the defensive shape and things like that, but also having the freedom to go and attack and express ourselves in that aspect as well.

“There are goals all over the pitch at the minute. It was frustrating earlier in the season when we had a spell when the goals weren’t going in.

“But we always knew as a group of lads that we’ve got players throughout the team who can put the ball in the back of the net.

“And hopefully the system is going to help us get more balls into the box, with quality, get higher up the pitch, and create more chances.”
