Sky Bet League Two 2019-20 Preview: Plymouth Argyle

New manager Ryan Lowe will be looking to get Plymouth Argyle promoted back to Sky Bet League One at the first time of asking in the League Two 2019-20 season.

The Pilgrims were relegated on goal difference last term, finishing in 21st-place on 50 points – level with AFC Wimbledon and Southend United, but with an inferior goal difference (-24) to their relegation rivals.

They had a number of winless runs, including an eight-game spell without a victory between March and April, which ultimately cost them their place in League One after just two seasons back in the third tier.

And new manager Ryan Lowe will now be tasked with securing Plymouth Argyle’s return to League One at the first time of asking in 2019-20.

Ryan Lowe

The former Bury, Tranmere Rovers, and Shrewsbury Town striker became Pilgrims boss at the beginning of June, following the sacking of previous manager Derek Adams.

Lowe won immediate promotion back to League One in his first season in management as Bury boss last term.

The 40-year-old guided the Shakers to a second-place finish, on 79 points – just six behind champions Lincoln City.

And now, after leaving the Shakers in the summer, he will be hoping to replicate that achievement at Home Park in 2019-20 – and take the Pilgrims instantly back to League One.

Players

Lowe’s men have lost some key players, including Graham Carey – who has joined CSKA Sofia – and David Fox and Yann Songo’o.

But the Pilgrims have a number of players already under contract ahead of the new season, including former Town loanee Calum Dyson.

Niall Canavan, Michael Cooper, Conor Grant, Freddie Ladapo, Tafari Moore, Joe Riley, Antoni Sarcevic, Ashley Smith-Brown, Ryan Taylor, and Scott Wootton are also under contract.

They released Lionel Ainsworth, Alex Battle, Harry Hodges, Jamie Ness, and Dan Rooney.
