WOMEN’S FIRST TEAM REPORT | GRIMSBY TOWN 5-0 BUXTON FC WOMEN

Our Women’s First Team made it five wins on the bounce as they put five past Buxton FC Women on home soil yesterday.

A Beth Wharton brace and goals from Laura Flecknor, Olivia Kershaw and Ray Swallow earned Ben Challen’s side the three points, with the Mariners now sitting second in the East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Division One North.

It took only six minutes for Flecknor to get herself on the scoresheet and give the Mariners the lead. A short corner from Olivia Kershaw was met at the near post by the midfielder and she steered the ball into the back of the net to give Town the early advantage.

The Mariners continued to put pressure on the visitors. Kershaw’s long-range effort glanced wide of the post and following some excellent footwork from Lily Jacklin, Abbie Emslie saw a header over the bar.

Kershaw doubled Town’s advantage just after the half an hour mark with a deserved strike. An inviting ball into the area was cleared by a Buxton defender, before falling to the feet of Kershaw, allowing her to open her body and send a powerful shot goalwards to see the Mariners 2-0 up at the break.

Beth Wharton got her brace early on in the second-half with two goals in two minutes.

The striker only had the keeper to beat for her first effort and she latched onto a through ball from Flecknor and made no mistake as she slotted home confidently for her second and Town’s fourth.

Ray Swallow got the fifth of the game with 75 minutes on the clock. The ball bounced around the box as shirts of black and white tried to get a foot on it, but it was Swallow who managed to nip in and send it home from close-range.

The Mariners travel away to face Notts County FC Women Devs in the League on Sunday with a 2pm kick-off as they search for their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions.
