Grimsby Town boss Michael Jolley has confirmed that on-loan Sunderland midfielder Elliot Embleton will miss the rest of the season through a hamstring tear.

The 19-year-old has scored four goals in 30 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell at Blundell Park this season.

But he is now set to miss the Mariners’ final seven games of the season, after suffering a grade three hamstring tear during his England U20 call-up last week.

Speaking on iFollow Mariners, Jolley said: “We had the news on Elliot, which was not good.

“He’s got a grade three hamstring tear so unfortunately that’s going to be him for the season, which is very sad for us because he’s done so well for us, so we’re upset about that.”

Jolley also confirmed that striker Jordan Cook will be out for between three and four weeks with a groin strain.

Alex Whitmore (hip), Danny Collins, and Harry Cardwell all have small knocks, and will face late fitness tests ahead of this Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two clash with Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park (3pm).

Jolley said Oldham Athletic’s managerial change hasn’t affected the Mariners’ preparation for Saturday’s game with the Latics.

Pete Wild will be taking charge of his first game of his second spell as Oldham’s caretaker boss this weekend – following Paul Scholes’ departure after 31 days as manager.

And Town boss Jolley said he knows what to expect from the Latics on Saturday.

He said: “We expect a tough game on the basis that they’ve had some excellent results over the season.

“But obviously recently they’ve had a change of manager, and that always brings with it a new impetus and a new direction.

“And also the fact they’ve not played a game in quite a while so I’m sure they’ll be really keen to get on the field on Saturday in front of their own fans, and give us a good game.

“Pete obviously had a period in charge a short time ago so we can look at those games, which we have done.

“But the players are still the same – they’re going to be the ones entering the field and playing the game for Oldham.

“The players have their qualities and we try to identify the strengths of the players who we’re playing against.

“Obviously they can be deployed in a slightly different way by a different manager, but fundamentally it’s the same set of players.

“So we’ve got a reasonable understanding of how we think they’ll go about it.

“I think Oldham, on their day this season, have been one of the good teams in the league – they’ve had some terrific results over the course of the season.

“But they perhaps haven’t achieved the levels of consistency that they would want, similar to ourselves.

“So we know it will be a tough match – it’s the first game back in charge for Pete so it’s a game we can look forward to.

“But, as always, it’s about our approach and how we can try to impose our game onto Oldham.”
