Five Classic Clashes Ahead of Bristol Rovers Showdown

As we get set to face Bristol Rovers once again, recent history suggests supporters could be in for another fiercely competitive encounter.

From narrow defeats to dramatic victories and stubborn defensive displays, meetings between the Mariners and the Gas have often been defined by fine margins. With both sides chasing important points at this stage of the season, the latest chapter promises to be another compelling addition to this fixture.

Here, we take a look back at five notable encounters between the sides.

Vanarama Conference Play-Off Final

Bristol Rovers 1-1 Grimsby Town (Rovers won 5-3 on penalties)

Sunday 17th May 2015 | Wembley Stadium | Attendance: 47,029

One of the most significant fixtures in the recent history of Grimsby Town came beneath the arch at Wembley Stadium. Town made the perfect start to the Vanarama Conference Play-Off Final when Lenell John-Lewis fired the Mariners ahead after just two minutes, stunning the large Wembley crowd.

Bristol Rovers responded before the half-hour mark through Ellis Harrison, levelling the contest at 1-1. Despite chances at either end and a tense period of extra time, neither side could find a winner.

The match was ultimately decided by penalties, with Rovers prevailing 5-3 in the shootout to seal promotion in front of 47,029 supporters.

Coca Cola League Two

Grimsby Town 4-3 Bristol Rovers

Saturday 10th February 2007 | Blundell Park | Attendance: 5,883

One of the most memorable meetings between the clubs came in a seven-goal thriller at Blundell Park.

Rovers led early through a Craig Disley opener, but the Mariners responded in style. Danny North, Justin Whittle, Danny Boshell and Ciaran Toner all found the net in a dramatic contest that swung from end to end.

Despite a late goal from Disley to complete his brace, Town held firm to seal a famous 4-3 victory in front of 5,883 supporters.

Coca Cola League Two

Bristol Rovers 1-2 Grimsby Town

Tuesday 9th August 2005 | The Memorial Stadium | Attendance: 6,300

Town produced a stirring comeback at the Memorial Stadium to secure an impressive away win. After Junior Agogo had given the hosts the lead, Martin Gritton levelled with 15 minutes remaining before Rob Jones powered home a late winner to send the travelling fans into raptures.

It was a result that underlined Town’s resilience on the road and remains one of the standout away victories in this fixture.

Coca Cola League Two

Grimsby Town 0-1 Bristol Rovers

Saturday 10th December 2005 | Blundell Park | Attendance: 4,739

A closely-contested League Two clash at Blundell Park was settled by a single goal. Chris Carruthers struck 10 minutes from time to give the visitors the edge in a game of limited clear-cut chances.

Despite late pressure from the Mariners, Rovers held on to claim the spoils in a match that epitomised how tight this rivalry has often been.

Sky Bet League Two

Grimsby Town 0-1 Bristol Rovers

Saturday 30th August 2025 | Blundell Park | Attendance: 7,406

The Mariners suffered their first defeat of the 2025-26 campaign as Rovers edged a tightly-fought contest at Blundell Park.

Macauley Southam-Hales’ superb first-half volley proved decisive, arriving after a corner was only partially cleared. Despite long spells of pressure after the interval, Town were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined visiting defence.

David Artell’s side pushed until the final whistle, with Evan Khouri and Jaze Kabia both going close, but Rovers managed the closing stages effectively to secure the points.

Statistically, this fixture has often been defined by defensive solidity. Rovers have kept a clean sheet in five of their seven league meetings with the Mariners this century and, following their 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture in August, will be aiming to complete only their second league double over Town, and their first since 1958-59.

However, the Mariners head into the contest in strong away form, having recorded clean sheets in each of their last four League Two away games – one short of equalling their Football League record of five consecutive away shutouts, set between September and November 2016.

With Town boasting the league’s best defensive record and Rovers looking to rediscover consistency, all the ingredients are in place for another closely-fought battle.

Encounters between these sides rarely lack intensity or narrative, and as both teams prepare to write the next chapter, supporters can expect another hard-fought and potentially pivotal clash.
