Giant-Killers: The Carabao Cup Run That Captured the Nation’s Attention

The 2025/26 Carabao Cup campaign will be remembered as one of the most remarkable cup runs in Grimsby Town’s modern history. From overcoming League Two opposition in the opening round to producing one of the greatest giant-killings ever seen at Blundell Park, the Mariners captured national attention and created memories that will live long in the minds of supporters for years to come.

Although the journey eventually came to an end against Premier League Brentford in the last 16, David Artell’s side had already written themselves into club folklore.

Town’s cup adventure began in August with a convincing 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town at Blundell Park. With Artell rotating his squad heavily, several players seized their opportunity. Justin Amaluzor opened the scoring with a clinical finish before Cameron Gardner doubled the lead shortly after half-time.

Although the visitors briefly threatened a comeback through Tom Sang, Jaze Kabia’s late penalty sealed progression to the second round. It was a composed, dominant performance and an early indication that Town were capable of making an impact in the competition.

What followed was a night that will forever take its place among the greatest in Grimsby Town history. Drawn at home to Manchester United, the Mariners were given little chance against one of world football’s biggest clubs. Yet under the lights at a sold-out Blundell Park, David Artell’s side delivered a performance for the ages.

Roared on by 9,747 supporters, Town played with courage, confidence and conviction from the first whistle. Charles Vernam ignited scenes of disbelief when he fired the Mariners ahead after 21 minutes before Tyrell Warren doubled the advantage from a corner to send the stadium into dreamland.

United, despite fielding a side packed with international talent, had no answer for Town’s intensity and organisation during a first half that will be remembered forever. The visitors eventually responded after the break. Bryan Mbeumo reduced the deficit before Harry Maguire’s late equaliser forced a penalty shootout.

What followed was pure drama. Both teams converted spot-kick after spot-kick in a marathon shootout. Oduor’s spot kicked was denied by Onano, but Christy Pym responded and saved the penalty of Matheus Cunha. Deep into the shootout, when Mbeumo’s second penalty crashed against the crossbar, Blundell Park erupted.

The Mariners had won 12-11 on penalties. Supporters flooded onto the pitch. National media hailed it as one of the biggest cup upsets in modern history. BBC pundit Chris Sutton described it as “one of the greatest nights in the club’s history”, while Carabao Cup organisers labelled it “one of the biggest cupsets ever”.

For everyone inside Blundell Park, it was simply unforgettable.

Cup runs are often defined by how teams respond after landmark victories. Just weeks after stunning Manchester United, the Mariners travelled to Hillsborough to face Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the third round.

Backed by more than 5,000 travelling supporters, Town once again showed they belonged on the big stage. After controlling much of the contest, they found the breakthrough early in the second half when Jaze Kabia glanced home the decisive goal from a corner. From there, the Mariners defended resolutely.

Tyrell Warren, Cameron McJannet and Christy Pym produced crucial moments at the back as Wednesday pushed for an equaliser, but Town stood firm to secure a famous 1-0 victory and reach the last 16 of the competition for the first time since 2001. The celebrations at the final whistle reflected another outstanding achievement and ensured the cup story would continue.

The reward for reaching the fourth round was another glamour tie at Blundell Park, this time against Premier League Brentford. A sold-out crowd gathered hoping lightning could strike twice.

Town started brightly and competed well during the opening stages, creating several promising moments and matching their top-flight opponents. However, Brentford demonstrated the quality and ruthlessness that has established them as one of the Premier League’s most respected sides.

Goals from Mathias Jensen, Keane Lewis-Potter and Reiss Nelson gave the visitors control before the interval. Fabio Carvalho added a fourth from the penalty spot after the break and Nathan Collins completed the scoring in a 5-0 victory.

While the result was disappointing, it did little to diminish what had already been achieved. The supporters remained behind at full-time to applaud the players, recognising the effort, commitment and excitement they had provided throughout the competition.

The 2025/26 Carabao Cup campaign was about far more than results. It showcased the progress made under David Artell, demonstrated the quality within the squad and provided supporters with moments they will never forget.

The victory over Manchester United instantly became part of Grimsby Town folklore. The win at Hillsborough reinforced the belief growing around the football club. Packed crowds, national headlines and unforgettable nights under the lights brought excitement and attention back to Blundell Park.

Four years after competing outside the Football League, the Mariners stood toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in English football and emerged with their reputation enhanced. Every great cup run eventually comes to an end. But this one ensured that the 2025/26 season will always be remembered as the year Grimsby Town once again captured the imagination of the football world.
