Grimsby Town Under-17s were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Bolton Wanderers in the PDL Cup on Tuesday afternoon, following a closely fought contest at the Bradley Football Development Centre.
Both sides created opportunities during an even opening period, with the two goalkeepers called into action to keep the scoreline level. Town showed good energy going forward, while remaining organised at the back as the game developed into a competitive cup tie.
It was the visitors who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, converting from close range after a dangerous cross into the box. Despite Town’s efforts to respond before the interval, Bolton took their slender advantage into half-time.
Bolton struck again shortly after the restart when a long-range effort took a deflection and found the corner, doubling the visitors’ lead and leaving Town with work to do.
The young Mariners responded positively and reduced the deficit when Graham forced the ball over the line following sustained pressure in the penalty area. Buoyed by the goal, Town pushed forward in search of an equaliser and fashioned several promising chances, but were unable to find the decisive touch as Bolton held on for victory.
Attention now turns to Saturday, when the Under-18s are in action against Lincoln City at Brigg Town, with kick-off scheduled for 12pm.
