Town put five past South Shields on Wednesday night to make it to third round draw of the FA Youth Cup.
Grimsby started brightly, Cameron Gardner was slid in behind by Clements, the forward however saw his effort denied by the goalkeeper. Gardner then turned provider pulling a ball back for Jack Collins he too faced the same result as the home keeper had a busy start to the night.
The early warning signs soon turned into an opening goal for Town, Gardner who had already threatened netted his first of the game drifting inside and smashing an effort from 20 yards into the top corner to break the deadlock.
The visitors were showing no signs of letting up as they quickly doubled their advantage, Gardner scoring his second, this time a well placed header meeting Callum Storr’s delivery from a corner.
At the other end Seb Auton was called into action to preserve the clean sheet making a fine stop from close range maintaining the two goal lead going into the break.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first 45 minutes, Gardner completed the perfect hattrick finishing for his third with his right foot from close range adding to the earlier header and opening left foot strike.
With ten minutes remaining the hosts pulled one back from close range however this didn’t shake the young mariners who managed to go on to score twice more. Grayson Giles managed to get on the end of Jaxon Blankley’s cross to add Town’s fourth of the night before Giles got his brace breaking clean through one-on-one, he coolly confirmed Town’s place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup.
